Unexpected Places

Love can be found in many places. Places you'd never really expect. Love that once gone, you are surprised at the impact it really did have.

I've experience just that this past week. While I truly loved this person - this crazy, cat loving, wine drinking, (sometimes mean) hilarious southern woman - I never truly realized the impact that she had on me until now. So many tears. So many more to come.

I met Mrs. Loraine Martin Duffey 25 years ago. She was my then-boyfriend's MOTHER. Oh gosh. Meeting the MOTHER. To say this gently - she HATED me. Me. Who was I to come in to the picture and take her first born son from her? Fast forward just a few months and that mean old woman started to like me. Somewhere along the way she began to love me. (I have cards and letters to prove it). Those first few months grew to years, and then decades. She became more than my Mother-in-Law. She became a Mom. I turned to her over and over through the years needing advice. Sometimes she gave great advice. Sometimes the only advice I'd get was - "Don't let the cat out!" I'm laughing and crying at the memories.

This absolutely beautiful soul also grew to love Jesus during the time I knew her. One day, years prior, she had given me a Bible for Easter. When she handed it to me - she said - "You know you can't live your life by that book." How happy I was when I learned that she no longer believed those words. She then became such an advocate for Christ. So much so that she drove me crazy sometimes. (I wouldn't have it any other way). Preach it, Lo.

In the end, we realize that the only thing in life that truly matters is the people around you. In the Bible, Jesus loved. He just did. There was no stipulation on whom He loved, or how much He loved. It didn't matter if they were related by blood. He loved them all equally. That is how we are called to live. To love. Doesn't matter who - family, friends, and yes - even Mothers in Law.

And sometimes, life happens. Changes happen. This woman, through the years, became my EX Mother in Law. In my heart of hearts - there was never, ever an EX in that title. She was, and is, and will always be - my Mom.

Time goes by too fast. Love those around you. No matter their title. Love your friends as if they are family. Because they are. We as Christians will be spending eternity with them. That, my friend, is FAMILY.

To my dear sweet Lo. My Mom. Grammy Lo. Crazy Cat Lady. We love you. We will miss you. And we will never, ever forget to not let the cat out.

Headshot and branding photography is more than just a picture—it's an opportunity to communicate your personality visually. Whether you're aiming to update your professional profile, website, or create a cohesive brand, preparation is key. Here’s a handy guide to help you look and feel your best on the day of your session.

1. Define Your Goals

Before you book your session, take a moment to think about what you want your images to convey.

  • Your Brand: Are you going for approachable and friendly, or professional and authoritative? Or, a little of both?
  • Where will you show them off?: Will these images appear on your website, LinkedIn profile, or marketing materials?
  • Message: Think about the story you want to tell. Your images should align with your core values and business mission.

A clear goal will guide every decision—from styling to the choice of location—and ensure your photos are both strategic and authentic.

2. Research Your Photographer

Choosing the right photographer is essential. Look for someone whose style matches your vision. To do this:

  • Review Portfolios: Check out the photographer's previous work to ensure their approach aligns with your desired aesthetic.
  • Check Reviews: Read testimonials to understand their process and client satisfaction.
  • Discuss Your Goals: Have an initial consultation with your photographer to ensure they understand your brand and can provide suggestions tailored to your needs.

Building a collaborative relationship with your photographer will help make the session a success.

*Bonus Tip*
Choose a photographer that will take the lead in design, clothing, and application, if you are unsure of your direction and need extra guidance.

3. Plan Your Wardrobe and Styling

Your wardrobe plays a huge role in shaping the final image. Consider the following:

  • Color Palette: Choose colors that reflect your brand. Solid colors typically work well - avoid overly busy patterns.
  • Fit and Comfort: Ensure your clothing fits well and feels comfortable, as this will help you look relaxed during the session. Long sleeve or 3/4 sleeves are usually best for business portraits.
  • Layering Options: Bring a few outfit changes to add variety and flexibility to your session.
  • Accessories: Select accessories that complement your look without distracting from your face. Avoid reflective or large jewelry.

Your wardrobe can elevate your professional image and reinforce your branding message.

4. Focus on Grooming and Makeup

Well-groomed hair and subtle makeup can make a big difference:

  • Hair: Style your hair as you normally would - try not to cut or color your hair within 1 week before your session. Don't forget to groom facial hair - eyebrows, nose, ears, beard, etc.
  • Skin Care: Prioritize your skincare routine in the days leading up to your shoot to ensure a healthy glow. Hydration is also a must for beautiful skin.
  • Makeup: Applying your makeup as you normally would is usually the best practice. You want to look like you - on your best day.
  • Fingernails: Have clean and manicured nails for your session day. Even if you don't think you're hands will be in the final image.

Taking care of these details helps you feel confident and ensures your images come out polished.

5. Prepare

Finally, a smooth day-of experience requires a bit of planning:

  • Rest Well: A good night’s sleep will help you look fresh and energized.
  • Hydrate and Eat: Stay hydrated and have a light meal before the session to maintain energy levels.
  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive a few minutes early to settle in and review any last-minute details.
  • Bring Essentials: Pack a small bag with makeup for touch-ups, water, and any additional wardrobe options.

These practical steps help ensure you’re relaxed and ready to shine in front of the camera.

How’s your online handshake? In a world where first impressions happen in a split second—often before you’ve even said a word—your headshot is doing the talking for you. Is it strong, confident, and inviting? Or is it selling you short? Whether you’re networking, building your brand, or attracting new clients, the right headshot can open doors before you even step through them. Let’s make sure yours is making the kind of introduction you want it to.

Why Your Headshot Matters

A high-quality headshot can:

  • Establish trust and credibility
  • Help you stand out in your industry
  • Convey confidence and approachability
  • Strengthen your personal or business brand

Your audience - whether potential clients, employers, or business connections - forms an impression almost instantly. A professional headshot helps make sure that impression is both strong and positive.

Overcoming Camera Anxiety

Stepping in front of the camera can feel intimidating and vulnerable. Many of my clients come to me expressing their discomfort with having their picture taken. Whether it’s feeling awkward about posing, worrying about looking too stiff, or simply not knowing what to do, I completely understand. That’s where I step in—not just as a photographer, but as a guide to help you feel at ease.

I focus on making our session a relaxed, enjoyable experience. Through simple direction, gentle coaching, and a bit of fun along the way, I help you feel comfortable so that your natural self shines through. My goal is to capture images that don’t just look good but feel like you—authentic, confident, and approachable.

Authenticity Over Perfection

Too often, people avoid updating their headshots because they feel self-conscious in front of the camera. But a great headshot isn’t about perfection—it’s about authenticity. People connect with images that feel real and natural. When your headshot reflects the real you, it creates a connection before you even speak a word. That’s why I focus on guiding you through the process in a way that brings out your genuine expressions, rather than forcing a stiff, posed look.

The right headshot will not only make you feel good about how you look, but it will also make a lasting impression on those viewing it. A true representation of who you are will help attract the right clients and opportunities for your business.

The Right Headshot for Your Brand

Not all headshots are created equal. Different industries call for different styles. Whether you need a bold, creative portrait or a clean, corporate look, I tailor every session to match your brand’s identity. Here are a few things to consider when planning your session:

  • Wardrobe: Stick to solid colors that complement your skin tone and avoid busy patterns.
  • Expression: A genuine, warm smile? A confident, serious look? I will help you with the best expression to fit your needs.
  • Background: Solid studio backgrounds for a classic look or environmental settings for a more dynamic, lifestyle feel.
  • Lighting: We use professional lighting that provides a polished, high-end finish. Beauty lighting is specifically used to soften shadows, diminish fine lines, and create a flattering, radiant look that highlights your best features.
  • Detailed Retouching: Meticulous retouching is completed on every image. You will look like you-on your very best day.

When Was Your Last Headshot?

If your headshot is outdated or doesn't reflect your current brand, now is the time for a refresh! And if you've never had a professional headshot, it's the perfect time to invest in one.

A polished, professional headshot helps you stay current, build credibility, and makes a lasting impact.

I’ll guide you through a stress-free, comfortable session, so you walk away with a professional headshot that highlights your confidence, authenticity, and personality.

Don’t let discomfort in front of the camera hold you back! Book your session today, and I’ll help you feel at ease while creating a headshot that you love.
